History.

Diwali is one of India's largest annual festivals (a Diwali Mela) and is traditionally celebrated for 5 continuous days with the third day, 'The Festival of Lights' being the main day. Diwali is never without spectacular fireworks and on the dark nights of Diwali (the new moon of the lunar month of Kartika, which falls in October / November every year) the sound of firecrackers announces the celebration of the:

FAVOURITE FESTIVAL OF INDIANS.

Diwali is celebrated by the population of India with much enthusiasm and jubilation. It involves homes being filled with oil lamps, candles and lights, exchanging Diwali sweets and gifts with their loved ones, people wear new clothes and jewellery and invite family and friends into their homes to celebrate together. Fireworks are let off to express their happiness and symbolise good over evil while the steady burning lamp is a constant symbol of an illuminated mind.

Diwali in Australia is an opportunity for the Indian community to:
  • Showcase the Indian Cultural Heritage to Australia.
  • Uniting the Indian population to celebrate their cultural heritage.
  • Demonstrate Indian 'Unity in Diversity' to the Australian Community.
